Smilegate Europe joined the biggest esport event in Europe bringing back the CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational 2018, where 4 teams competed for the champion title and lion’s share of the $30,000 USD.
Every year Intel® Extreme Masters (IEM) is sponsored by Intel and organized by ESL, the world’s largest esports company. It is the world’s longest running pro gaming circuit, this year making stops in Sydney, Shanghai, Oakland and then Katowice. Growing year on year, IEM 2017 was attended by 173,000 fans and reached more than 46 million unique online viewers.
“We are delighted to be returning to Europe for a second time with CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational,” said Smilegate CROSSFIRE eSports director Brady Yeo in a statement. “ESL is one of the leading professionals in the esports industry and we want to continue this partnership to deliver more CROSSFIRE esports around the world.”
The three European representatives at IEM Expo Invitationals were “PENTA Sports”, “Flipsid3 Tactics” as well as “XQ Intense”. They challenged last year’s title holder and world champion “Super Valiant Gaming,” from China. The CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational 2018 took place on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 during the second weekend of the IEM Expo.
In their first international match, XQ intenSe defeated FlipSid3 Tactics and showed a great performance.
PENTA Sports surprised the audience by beating Super Valiant Gaming in the winners bracket and advanced straight to the Grand Final match.
Super Valiant Gaming eventually made it into the Grand Final through the lower bracket, and once again became the CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational 2018 champion by overcoming PENTA Sports by 2:1.
Breaks between all the exciting games were full of giveaways, contests testing fans’ knowledge about CROSSFIRE, challenges pitting them against professional team members or simply taking pictures with CROSSFIRE cosplayers.
After kicking off 2018 with CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational, Smilegate will continue to develop and expand CROSSFIRE’s presence in the international esports scene throughout the year. More information will be announced through the official CROSSFIRE esports website.

With more than 8 million players around the world, CROSSFIRE is one of the most successful esports titles currently operating. Even after a decade since its release, CROSSFIRE is still playing in the big leagues: just in March, the statistical company SUPERDATA published an overview in which CROSSFIRE hit second place amongst the top grossing PC titles.
European Teams Are About to Fight Their Way to Shanghai
Starting in the middle of June, the European qualifier begins with two preliminaries before culminating in a Final on June 24th. The last team standing in Europe will be invited to the CROSSFIRE 2017 Global Invitational, due to take place in Shanghai, China starting on August 1st.

Just slightly over a month after taking over the services for the European version of CROSSFIRE, the EU division has more good news for their community, especially the German part. From today on, the 30th of March, the German version of the game will be available. This is the first additional language besides English available in CROSSFIRE EUROPE. But this month’s update is bringing not only the German version of the game but also additional maps, modes and new VVIP Characters – Switcher. Three maps are especially worth mentioning: The first two are Morocco and Cairo, those are the maps that were very desired by the EU community and until now were only available in other versions. The Smilegate team is very happy that they fulfilled the promise given to their community. The third map is called Pelourinho and with the March update it has its “global” premiere. Morocco, Pelourinho are S&D maps, whereas Cairo is available in TDM.
CROSSFIRE has also been very active on the eSport scene. After the participation at the IEM Expo in Katowice Poland – where four great teams (including 3 big names from Europe: PENTA Sports, FlipSid3 Tactics and ESC Gaming) were participating in the CROSSFIRE Invitational, and the winning trophy went to last year’s world champions, the Chinese team Super Valiant Gaming – SG EU achieved two very important things: First of all on the 5th of March, so just after the IEM Expo, the company announced starting a cooperation with ESL and the beginning of CFS: Major European Championship.
The very first monthly finals will take place on the 12th of April. All players who would still like to take part in the CFS: MEC and participate in the upcoming qualifiers can register here. This is a great way for teams to qualify for the Grand Finals later this year.
But another, huge step forward is the presence of two European teams in the CFS: Pro League. Earlier mentioned PENTA Sports and FlipSid3 Tactics. It’s really important to stress that those two German teams are the very first European teams that were invited to the CF PL and they are currently training in China, getting ready for the Play offs of the CFS: MEC that will take place just prior to the finals at this year’s Gamescom.
From yesterday, the 16th of February 2017, Smilegate Europe (Smilegate Games GmbH ) is officially handling the European version of CROSSFIRE to provide a local, more effective and, most importantly, more convenient service for European players. The NA version continues to be operated by sister company Smilegate West. The new CROSSFIRE team has already been actively working on new ideas and features for the past months. As one major step, following upcoming game updates and additional content, the CROSSFIRE team will, in the nearest future, launch a German version of the game. It will make German the second language available in the European client.
But the main focus for Smilegate Europe will be organising and participating in major eSports tournaments starting with this year’s IEM Expo during the Intel® Extreme Masters World Championship 2017. The game tournament will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017, during the second weekend of the fifth instalment of the IEM World Championship. The IEM Expo will be held from March 3-5, 2017 at the International Convention Center (ICC), neighbouring the Spodek Arena in Katowice, Poland. With its participation at IEM Expo, Smilegate broadens CROSSFIRE’s international scope and continue its development as an eSports title.
Here are the teams and tournament information for CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational!
Formerly known as Vici Gaming, SuperValiant(SV) makes a fresh start in 2017 with a new company. SV, composed of the best players in China, took the championship in 2016 CFS Grand Finals. Lastly, 4mE is a veteran who has been playing Crossfire professionally for 7 years now. Let’ see if SV can continue their success in the CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational.
A famous name in CF Europe, ‘FlipSid3 Tactics’ is a very young team that already proved their name in 2016 by taking 2nd place in the CFS Grand Finals. The leader Luca ‘SEVEN’ Bayati is a good motivator and knows how to adapt to his opponents. Snox is considered as one of the best aimers in Europe, with past experience in teams like ESC and TeraGaming. KREEDZ recently joined the team, and is known for his great aim and movement. Also, phaze is the most experienced CFS player in Europe, known for his sniping skills. DeNis, the youngest player in the team, has quick movement and is considered as a key player in the team. Together, they make a strong team with a goal to take the glory in the CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational.
PENTA Sports is a famous and a successful team in the European region. After starting out as an underdog in the scene, they qualified for their first CFS Grand Finals in 2014, and managed to secure another spot for the CFS Grand finals in 2015 and WCA 2015 Grand Finals. The team successfully placed 4th at CFS GF 2014, 2nd at CFS GF 2015 and 3rd at CFGI 2016. Loones, nLs, ReijN and bL4ME have been playing for almost 1 year together. bL4ME and ReijN have the best aim, and nLs and Loones manage the tactical play style of the team. Newcomer MooN is a talented player who can take the sniper role in the team. PENTA has their eyes set on becoming the best in both Europe and the international scene.
ESC Gaming was formed early 2016 (previously Team Cursive) and have won the first season of the Crossfire Competitive League (UK). After an upsetting defeat by FlipSid3 Tactics in the semi-finals CFS 2016 Europe National Finals, part of the team decided to quit. However, the core of the team—Nova, Lionclaw, Nartex—was dedicated in rebuilding their team. Nova and Lionclaw are known for their amazing and fast aim, and Nartex is their indispensable support and solid clutcher. They acquired Scorpz the aggressive and versatile sniper and FLEXX, a very aggressive entryfragger who has proven himself many times both in Europe and on international events. The team now exists of players who have been around for a long time and are respected by the community. ESC Gaming seeks to represent Europe in the best possible way in the CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational.
CROSSFIRE IEM Expo Invitational will be held in BO1 Double Elimination format, with a BO3 final.
